Penguin Books Literary Novels Editorial Review

Donna Tartt's "The Secret History" is a fictional novel set at Hampden College in the US in the 1980s, which follows the story of a small group of Classics students and the events that occur that challenge their morality. The book is described as a "whydunit," not a whodunit, and focuses on "Dionysian events and their Consequences in closed and exclusive college settings." Narrated by California transplant Richard, an outsider who is initially on scholarship, we meet the key characters, including the enigmatic Julian Morrow and the potentially psychopathic Henry. The reviewer loves the "sweeping romanticism" of the book and, despite knowing the identity of the central character, found the reason behind the "why" of their actions to be ambiguous and mysterious. At the novel's center are themes of death, funerals, and philosophy, along with the Constant wearing of masks and the Consequences of acting on impulse. The writing is seen as solid, with the storytelling seen as engaging and worth reading.
