The foam insert has slits that cushion the brushes and hold them in place, keeping them securely in the box. The telescoping case is extendable and can change its height depending on the length of your brushes. Though some reviewers complained about the looseness of the telescoping case when extended, they recommended duct taping the case to prevent it from sliding back into its shortest position.
