What is the Synology 12 Bay Disk Expansion DX1222 Diskless?

The Synology 12 Bay Disk Expansion DX1222 is an external expansion unit designed to increase storage capacity for compatible Synology NAS devices. Its diskless feature allows users to customize their storage by choosing drives that meet their specific needs. This unit is particularly suitable for businesses and professionals who require substantial data storage, as it can host up to 12 additional drives, effectively scaling your existing storage environment.

How does the Synology DX1222 connect to my NAS?

The DX1222 connects to a compatible Synology NAS using an eSATA or expansion port, which ensures high-speed data transfer and efficient performance. This direct connection allows the NAS unit to recognize the drives within the DX1222 as additional storage space. Users can easily manage the new storage capacity via Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM) interface, which integrates seamlessly with the existing system, making it user-friendly for monitoring and managing your data.

Can I mix drive brands and capacities in the DX1222?

Yes, you can mix different brands and capacities of hard drives in the Synology DX1222, provided they are compatible with the NAS. This flexibility allows users to optimize storage based on budget or requirements. However, for the best performance, it is usually recommended to use drives of the same size and speed. This setup offers a practical way to gradually expand your storage without needing to replace existing drives in your NAS.

What RAID configurations are supported with the DX1222?

The DX1222 supports various RAID configurations, including RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, and RAID 10, depending on the setup of the connected NAS. This allows users to choose a configuration that balances performance, redundancy, and available storage. By selecting a suitable RAID level, you can enhance data protection against drive failures while optimizing storage capacity and speed according to your specific needs and workflows.

Is the DX1222 compatible with all Synology NAS devices?

The DX1222 is not compatible with all Synology NAS devices; it is specifically designed to work with select models that support expansion units. For compatibility, check the Synology website or the product documentation of your specific NAS model. Ensuring that your NAS can accommodate the DX1222 will enable you to maximize the benefits of the expansion unit, providing seamless integration and performance enhancements to your data storage infrastructure.

What types of hard drives can I use with the DX1222?

The DX1222 supports both SATA HDDs and SSDs of various sizes, which means you can use standard 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives. It's important to choose drives that are specifically designed for NAS environments to ensure reliability and optimal performance. Utilizing high-quality NAS-rated drives can enhance the durability and efficiency of your expansion unit, making it suitable for scenarios that require continuously running applications and large data transfers.

Can I perform hot-swapping with the drives in the DX1222?

Yes, hot-swapping is supported in the DX1222, allowing you to replace and add drives without powering down the unit or NAS. This feature is invaluable for users seeking to maintain uptime and streamline maintenance. Hot-swapping is particularly advantageous in critical applications where minimizing downtime is essential. This functionality ensures that your storage expansion can be managed smoothly even in high-demand environments.

What is the maximum storage capacity supported by the DX1222?

The Synology DX1222 can support up to 108TB of total storage capacity when using 12 SATA drives with 12TB each. This scalable capacity is ideal for users needing substantial storage for large projects, media libraries, or extensive backups. With its expansion capabilities, businesses can efficiently manage considerable data without needing multiple storage solutions, making the DX1222 an excellent choice for data-intensive applications.

Does the DX1222 offer any data protection features?

Yes, the DX1222 provides several data protection features when paired with a compatible Synology NAS, including snapshots, data replication, and RAID configurations. These features enhance data security by preventing data loss in case of drive failure or accidental deletion.
