What is the frequency response range of the Neumann KM 185 microphone?

The Neumann KM 185 microphone features an impressive frequency response range of 20Hz to 20kHz. This extensive range allows it to capture both the low-end depth of bass instruments and the high-end clarity of vocals and cymbals. This versatility makes it suitable for various applications, including studio recordings, live performances, and broadcast settings. Musicians and sound engineers often choose this microphone for its accurate sound reproduction and broad frequency range, ensuring high-quality audio capture in diverse scenarios.

What type of polar pattern does the Neumann KM 185 have?

The Neumann KM 185 is built with a hypercardioid polar pattern, which is ideal for capturing sound from a focused direction while minimizing background noise. This feature makes it an exceptional choice for isolating instruments or vocals in a noisy environment. For instance, during live performances or recording sessions in busy studios, the hypercardioid pattern helps in achieving a clearer sound by reducing unwanted sound interference from other instruments or speakers, thereby enhancing the overall recording quality.

Is the Neumann KM 185 microphone suitable for use in studio recording?

Yes, the Neumann KM 185 is highly regarded for studio recording applications. Its high sensitivity and low self-noise make it an excellent choice for vocalists, acoustic instruments, and even orchestral settings. Audio engineers appreciate its ability to reproduce sound with remarkable detail and accuracy, making it a staple in professional recording studios. Whether capturing the nuanced tones of a guitar or the subtle inflections of a singer's voice, this microphone delivers exceptional clarity and fidelity.

What are the typical applications for the Neumann KM 185 microphone?

The Neumann KM 185 microphone is immensely versatile and is used in a variety of applications. Common uses include live sound reinforcement, studio recordings, and broadcasting. Its hypercardioid pattern helps isolate sound sources, making it perfect for stage performances or recordings in multi-instrument environments. Additionally, sound designers and content creators favor this microphone for capturing ambient sounds or voiceovers due to its clear and natural audio quality, adapting seamlessly to different settings and styles.

What output impedance does the Neumann KM 185 microphone have?

The Neumann KM 185 features a 50 Ohms output impedance, which is optimal for connecting to a variety of audio equipment. This impedance allows for compatibility with most mixing consoles, preamps, and recording interfaces, ensuring minimal signal loss or degradation. The low impedance also helps in reducing susceptibility to interference during long cable runs, making the KM 185 a reliable choice for both studio and live applications. Musicians and audio engineers benefit from its consistent performance, whether in a controlled studio environment or on stage.

Can I use the Neumann KM 185 for live performances?

Absolutely, the Neumann KM 185 is an excellent choice for live performances. Its hypercardioid polar pattern effectively minimizes off-axis noise, allowing performers to focus on their sound without unwanted feedback from monitors or other instruments. The microphone’s high SPL handling and robust design make it durable enough for the rigors of live sound environments. Venue sound engineers frequently choose the KM 185 for capturing vocals or instruments in bands, ensuring a high-quality audio output that stands out in live mixes.

How does the Neumann KM 185 compare to other microphones in its class?

When compared to other microphones in its class, the Neumann KM 185 stands out due to its superb sound fidelity and build quality. Unlike many competitors, this microphone delivers a finely-tuned frequency response that captures a broader range of audio nuances. Professionals appreciate its low noise floor and ability to handle high sound pressure levels without distortion, which is critical in demanding studio and live environments. This combination of performance and reliability is what makes the KM 185 a preferred choice among audio professionals.

What are the physical dimensions and weight of the Neumann KM 185?

The Neumann KM 185 is compact and lightweight, featuring a length of approximately 140mm (5.5 inches) and a diameter of around 22mm (0.87 inches). Weighing just about 150 grams (5.3 ounces), its lightweight design makes it ideal for applications where mobility is essential, such as on-stage performances or location recordings. This portability does not compromise its performance, ensuring that audio professionals can easily transport and set up the microphone without hassle.

Does the Neumann KM 185 come with any accessories?

Typically, the Neumann KM 185 comes with a few standard accessories, including a protective case and a microphone clip. These accessories are designed to keep the microphone secure during transport and to ensure stable mounting during use. Users often appreciate the case for protecting the microphone from damage when not in use, especially during gigs or travels. The microphone clip facilitates easy attachment to stands, making setup seamless, whether in a studio or on stage.
